Middle School Physical Education Course Syllabus

Ms. Kristina Solheim

Dear Students and Parents:

Welcome to PE Class and the 2011-2012 school year.  I am looking forward to working with all of you this year.  We will be engaging in many different activities during the year, and I hope to maintain open lines of communication between all of us.  The following is an explanation of my expectations for this course.

Philosophy of Physical Education

Physical Education is an integral part of the development and education of every student but it does not stop at the classroom door.  The program seeks to develop and promote a positive attitude about health and fitness through the understanding of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.  Our primary focus is on Lifetime Fitness and giving you the skills to participate in activities outside of the classroom.

Course Goals

Each student will participate in a variety of activities during class. Some of the components of the program include: Health, Physical Fitness, Cooperative and Non-Competitive Games, Sports (Individual and Team), and Lifetime Activities.

Behavior

No play fighting or striking one another in PE classes.  Be honest at all times, your reputation begins today.  Do your best in all aspects of effort and behavior.  Treat others as you would like others to treat you.  When someone else is talking, be attentive and courteous.

Participation /Tardiness

All students are required to participate in class.  Participation includes dressing out as well as actively participating in each activity.  The following guidelines will be used in class:

Illness – If a student comes to school but is too sick to participate in class, he/she must bring a note from a parent.  If a student is unable to participate due to illness or an injury for more than one class, a note from a doctor is required.  Any student not actively participating for more than one day might be required to complete a separate written assignment for a participation grade.

Tardiness- Students are expected to be on time to class.  They will have five minutes to change and be at the designated activity area.

Participation – Every student is expected to dress out in a PE uniform and participate every class period. Uniforms must be worn by the third class period.  Without a uniform you will loose points but, if possible, you will still be expected to participate. Correct athletic shoes and a reusable water bottle are part of the PE uniform.

Dressing out and Showering

Each student is required to purchase at least one school PE uniform.  Students are expected to wear a clean one to each class with proper athletic shoes and socks.  Slip-on shoes are not acceptable.   Students MUST bring a reusable water container to class  and are  encouraged to wear a baseball cap for outside activities.

Do not bring anything you are not going to use to class.  Large pieces of jewelry cannot be worn to class.  The school will not be responsible for lost jewelry or anything else that is brought to class.

Students will be given 10 minutes at the end of class to shower and dress for their next class.  Good hygiene is a critical part of our well-being.  Students must provide their own towel, shower slippers, soap, and deodorant, as well as anything else they may need.

 Grading

All children do not have the same physical capabilities so my grading is primarily based on participation and improvement, not on their physical abilities.  They will be evaluated and graded as follows:

50%     Participation/Effort/Attitude- includes level of participation/effort/enthusiasm, monitoring and development of physical fitness, listening and communication skills, goal setting, use of time and safety procedures.

25%     Teamwork/Leadership/Sportsmanship- includes partner and group interaction, assuming a leadership role, helping/advising those in need and respect/empathy towards others.

10%     Skill- understanding and applying the principals and concepts learned.

10%     Fitness-based on the Presidential Fitness test & improvement

5%       Punctuality/Uniform- arrives and is prepared for class on time. Wears appropriate uniform & athletic shoes (incl. water bottle) for the class.

 Health

The grading for health will be: 50% participation, teamwork & leadership and 50% homework, quizzes, tests, presentations and projects.

If you exhibit good effort, have a positive attitude, and come prepared to each class, you will be successful in Physical Education Class.  I am looking forward to working with all of you this year.  If you have any questions, please contact me at ksolheim@ise.ac.th

My blog address is: iseksolheim.wordpress.com.  Students will be expected to check my blog and know what we will be doing in class.  When you are absent for any reason, you should check my blog to see if you have missed anything.

 Sincerely,    Ms. Kristina Solheim
