SWIMMING PROGRAM

2011-2012

Pool Regulations and Policies

1.  Responsible and safe behavior is mandatory.

2.  No running on the pool deck.

3.  Food, chewing gum or drinks other than water are not allowed on the pool deck.

Eating Before Swimming

Eat only a light low fat meal and allow 20-25 minutes before you swim.  Hydration should begin a few hours before you go swimming to reduce the risk of cramping.  Try to avoid too many protein foods directly before swimming such as milk, cheese, eggs and meat.  A better choice would be carbohydrates.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen must be applied at least thirty minutes prior to entering the water to be effective.  Do not apply sunscreen just prior to entering the water.

Supervision

No one, not even the best of swimmers, should underestimate the dangers of being around or in water.  No student is allowed to swim at the pool alone or unsupervised during class.  You must wait until the instructor gives permission to enter the water.

Safety

If in trouble through illness, injuring, cramping etc. remain as calm as possible, call and signal for help and swim if able, to the side of the pool or nearest exit.

Emergency Pool Clearing

Three blasts of a whistle means clear the pool immediately.  Exit quickly and safely.  Once out of the water, move back from the edge.  Listen for further instruction.  One blast of the whistle means be quiet, stop and listen for further instruction.

Diving (entering the water head first)

NO diving is allowed into the pool unless you have been given permission by the instructor.  You should never dive in water less than 1.8 meters deep (unless executing a shallow racing dive).  Make sure the area is clear of obstacles and others before entering the water.  Note the number one cause of paralyses in youths in North America is caused by diving accidents.  Flips from the side of the pool are prohibited at all depths.

Uniform for PE classes

All students are expected to bring the following to PE swim classes:

1.  Proper swimming attire.  Girls should wear a one piece suit (no bikinis).    Boys should wear a standard swimsuit, no shorts.  T-shirts are not acceptable unless it is specifically a swimming shirt.

2.  For those with shoulder length or longer hair, it must be pulled back in a hair tie or a cap must be worn.  Hair can not be hanging in the face.

3.  Swim goggles (preferably made of silicone not plastic).

4.  Towel and water bottle.

Swimming Participation/Make-Up Agreements

When a student misses swimming for any reason, it must be made up.  There are some exceptions to this rule looked at case by case.  ALL students are required to participate in swimming.  Students will jog down to the pool and a bus will pick them up to go back to school.

1.  Students are expected to change into appropriate swim attire and participate in every class to the best of his or her ability.  A daily participation grade will be assigned.  A positive attitude and full participation is expected.

2.  If a student forgets his/her swimsuit, the class must be made up after school as soon as possible. Make-ups will be on Mondays.  During the class period,  the student will be required to pay attention at the pool or help other students in the water, depending on what they are doing.  Make-ups must be arranged with the teacher a day before to arrange for bus transport.

3.  If a student misses a class for a school function, there are a few different ways to make up the class depending on what was done in class and on their swimming level.

4.  If a student is in school but cannot participate, a letter from a doctor or parent is required.  This includes girls who cannot participate due to having their periods.
